Overview
Creatine is a nitrogen-containing compound that acts as a rapid ATP-regenerating energy store; about 95 % of the body’s creatine is found in skeletal muscle, mainly as phosphocreatine. It can be obtained from the diet or synthesized in a multistep reaction in the kidneys and liver from L-arginine, glycine, and L-methionine, after which it is transported to muscle tissue.
Applications
Used as a nutritional supplement to enhance athletic performance, and also under investigation for the treatment of neuromuscular disorders.
