It can be used as an amino acid protecting agent and is also a highly efficient and selective reagent for the preparation of hydroxy amino acid derivatives, specifically N-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) (Fmoc) derivatives. It is also used in glycopeptide synthesis.
