Wang Zaozi is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Isodon in the family Lamiaceae. It was first recorded in the Ming Dynasty classic Jiuhuang Bencao (“Materia Medica for Famine Relief”), and is locally known as “Wang Zaozi” in Suzhou, Anhui Province.
Wang Zaozi exhibits pharmacological activities such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and hypoglycemic effects. Its main chemical constituents include diterpenoids, triterpenoids, and flavonoids. Most of the diterpenoid compounds belong to the ent-kaurane type. The ent-kauranoid diterpenes, characterized by a tetracyclic skeleton with a C-8/C-13 bridged ring system, possess multi-target anticancer mechanisms of action.
