Aspartic acid is an endogenous NMDA receptor agonist. It functions in the central brain region to release hormones such as luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and growth hormone. D-aspartic acid is used in the synthesis of sweeteners and in medicine to treat heart disease. It is also used as a liver function promoter, ammonia detoxifier, fatigue stimulant and component of amino acid infusion. Aspartame, a commonly used artificial sweetener, has one molecule of aspartic acid, one molecule of phenylalanine and one molecule of methanol as its metabolic products in the body for each molecule. The synthesis of potassium aspartate is used for hypokalemia and arrhythmia caused by digitalis poisoning.
