Transferrin (TRF), also known as siderophilin, is a glycoprotein, with an approximate molecular weight of 76.5 kDa. TRF isconsidered to have been created as a result of an ancient gene duplicaion event leading to generation of homologous C- andN-terminal domains, each of which can reversibly bind to a ferric ion, in vivo, transferrin plavs a critical role in the ferric iontransport and metabolism, and thus is an important extracellular antioxidant, in vitro, it has a very important role in serum-freemedium to prevent the damage to cells by free radicals, sustain cell arowth and proliferation and maintain extracelular ironbalance.
