2nd Annual Precision Medicine and Immuno-Oncology China Summit

The application of new technologies has contributed to better accuracy in diagnosis, improved strategies for care, and the discovery of novel drugs for customized treatments. Population aging and lifestyle changes have contributed to the rise of cancer incidence in China. In 2015, new cancer cases and cancer-related deaths were estimated at 4.3 million and 2.8 million respectively.

After US Precision Medicine Initiative(PMI) was first launched in 2015, the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) held the first national precision medicine strategy conference in March 2015 and announced plans to invest RMB60 billion (US$9billion) to support precision medicine between 2015 and 2030. And in 2016, the Chinese 13th Five-Year Plan for pharma industry made precision and personalized medicine to be included with particular focus and emphasis on the development of novel antibody drugs, gene therapy, and cell therapy related biological products.

In 2017, it marks the new era for gene and cell therapy in the world. The U.S. FDA approved Novartis’ Kymriah CAR-T Gene Therapy, making the first gene therapy available in the United States, and nearly two months after, the regulator has given the go-ahead to another player Kite Pharma and its Yescarta has become the second CAR-T immunotherapy to be approved in the US. Also in China, CFDA made a historic action in December by approving CAR-T clinical trials sponsored by Legacy Biotech.
