Vaccination is arguably the most successful medical intervention, which has become a mandatory part of many countries’ health care programs and has shown to be an effective instrument to control infectious diseases worldwide in humans and animals, e. g. by the extermination of small pox and the “rinderpest”. The development and launch of novel vaccines has seen a turn-around in the 1980s, which has been facilitated by the appearance of novel pathogens, by the need to control global infectious disease and by the impressive progress made in relevant areas of science and technology; particularly the encouraging progress made in the fields of immunology, molecular biology, genomics and host-parasite interaction, but also the progress in the arena of novel manufacturing technologies.

However, the rebound is also due to alliances formed between biotech companies, established pharmaceutical industries, non-profit organizations and academia that have facilitated the development of novel vaccines and expanded the spectrum of existing vaccines. Vaccine enterprises have gained further momentum by partnerships between vaccine players of the developed world and the growing vaccine proponents of emerging countries and are driven by the knowledge triangle connecting education, knowledge and business, with entrepreneurship in the centre.

The 7th Annual World Congress of Vaccine in Nanjing will provide a unique opportunity to discuss ways of how to develop novel products that will sell in developed countries, may serve the high price segment of less developed countries, but also meet the requirements for distribution to populations, unable to pay for vaccines. Particularly, the question will be addressed, whether there may be ways, how biotech, vaccine industries in developed and less developed countries and charitable trusts could partner and synergize in creating a “win-win situation” for all involved parties.

I welcome all participants, contributors and speakers to the outstanding conference like to thank the organizers for their achievement to implement the outstanding program and the City of Nanjing for the hospitality. Last not least I wish you all a very successful conference!
