South East Asia Market Overview

  1. Governments across Southeast Asia are introducing universal healthcare programs. This is driving rising demand for all categories of medicines, especially generic drugs. Since launching its mandatory healthcare coverage program (JKN) in 2014, Indonesia’s government healthcare spending has increased by 4%, and is forecast to reach USD 7.8 billion in 2016.

  2. Implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will open up greater opportunities for trade and commerce among its member states. Healthcare, including pharmaceuticals, has been identified as a key sector where efforts to achieve harmonization of laws and standards will be concentrated.

  3. Indonesia imports over 90% of the pharmaceutical ingredients it uses. The value of imports during the first half of 2015 saw a staggering rise of 17%, to USD 296 million.
