Aprotinin, also known as aprotinin peptide, is a competitive and reversible serine protease inhibitor. It forms stable complexes with serine proteases and blocks the active site of the enzyme. This binding is reversible, and most aprotinin-protease complexes dissociate under extreme pH conditions (<pH 3.0). Aprotinin inhibits plasmin, trypsin, kallikrein, and fibrinolytic enzymes but does not inhibit factor Xa and thrombin. Structurally, aprotinin is a monomeric globular protein derived from bovine lung, consisting of 58 amino acids arranged in a single peptide chain with three intermolecular disulfide bonds.
