Description :
Co-trimoxazole is a fixed combination of two antimicrobial drugs (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in 5:1 ratio), acting synergistically to block two enzymes which catalyze the successive stages of folic acid synthesis in microorganisms.
Indications and usage :
Infections caused by agents sensitive to the drug:
- respiratory tract and ENT infections: sinusitis, medium otisis, bronchitis, bronchiectatic disease, pneumonia. Treatment and prevention of pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii with concurrent AIDS;
- digestive tract infections: salmonellosis, typhoid fever, AIDS-associated isosporiasis, cholera, enterotoxigenic colibacillosis;
- urogenital system infections: bacterial uncomplicated acute and chronic cystitis; epididymitis, acute pyelonephritis, pyelitis, urethritis (also gonococcic); prostatitis, adnexitis, chancroid caused by Haemophilus ducreyi, venereal granuloma;
- skin and soft tissue infections: pyodermia, furunculosis, abscesses, infected wounds;
- other infections: osteomyelitis, acute brucellosis (as part of combination therapy), nocardiosis, toxoplasmosis, whooping cough, blastomycosis, malaria (as part of combination therapy), fasciolosis.
