The Maquiberry shrub (Aristotelia chilensis), also called queldón, Maquiberry Powder is an evergreen or sometimes facultatively deciduous species belonging to the Elaeocarpaceae family, which can be found from the IV to the XI region in Chile, in the central valley and also the Andean mountainside. The species prospers in heights from sea level up to 8600 feet.
It prefers organic rich soils, slightly acidic and well drained . It can be found in low canopies or colonizing open spaces in communities called "macales".
The fruit is a black brilliant berry of about 4 - 6mm of diameter that ripens in late summer or early autumn. It is edible and used widely by the locals (the Mapuche indians) for its medicinal properties and other uses.
The nineteenth century French naturalist and botanist Claudio Gay was one of the first occidentals who described the uses of this little and marvelous fruit.
