Guanine is an organic base that is widely present in the animal and plant kingdoms. The chemical name is 2-amino-6-oxypurine. It is a colorless square crystal or crystalline powder. When water is slowly distilled off in an aqueous solution containing a large excess of ammonia, small rhombic crystals are obtained. The melting point is 360℃(decomposes and partially sublimates). It is soluble in ammonia water, caustic alkali and dilute mineral acid solutions, slightly soluble in ethanol and ether, insoluble in water, and has a strong absorbency to ultraviolet rays. It is a component of guanosine and guanosine monophosphate. Its hydrochloride salt is a monohydrate powder crystal. It loses water at 100℃ and hydrogen chloride at 200℃. It dissolves in acidified water but is insoluble in water, ethanol and ether. Guanine can be obtained by hydrolyzing fish scales with hydrochloric acid. As an important base for nucleic acids, it is one of the four main bases in DNA and RNA and also a component of various guanylate acids. Its N9 is linked to ribose or deoxyribose C1 by β -glycosidic bonds to form guanosine or deoxyguanosine.
