Atosiban is a combined receptor antagonist for oxytocin and vasopressin V1A, which are structurally similar to vasopressin V1A.When oxytocin receptor is blocked, oxytocin can still play its role through V1A receptor. Therefore, both the above two receptor pathways need to be blocked at the same time to effectively inhibit uterine contraction.This is one of the main reasons why beta-agonists, calcium channel blockers, and prostaglandin synthase inhibitors are not effective in suppressing uterine contractions.
