[Pharmacological action] It is an alkaloid molecule worth mentioning in the history of organic synthesis. Tolpinone was reacted with dimethyl carbonate in the presence of base to produce 2-methoxycarbonyl tolpinone, and then the product was hydrogenated to methyltitobline in the presence of Rani nickel. Finally, methyltitobline and benzoyl chloride were esterized in the presence of pyridine to obtain cocaine.

[Application] Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of atropine sulfate.
