The precursor for the formation of betamethasone dipropionate is 1,4,9,16-tetraenepregna-3,20-diketone. During the manufacturing, the precursor is modified at carbon numbers 9,11,16,17, and 21 to obtain betamethasone dipropionate and other derivatives e.g., betamethasone sodium phosphate and betamethasone acetate to name a few. The manufacturing method is modified to use the same precursor as used in earlier methods but the process is simpler than before and it doesn’t require expensive equipment and the final product is manufactured in greater volume than before. The manufacturing process uses an improved form of Grignard reaction where epoxy groups carry out this reaction directly, therefore, bypassing many steps and lowering the cost of production of betamethasone dipropionate.
