Metformin HCl Dosage

For treatment of type 2 diabetes, the initial dose for the immediate-release tablets is 500 mg by mouth every 12 hours or 850 mg by mouth daily with meals. The maintenance dose is 1550 mg – 2550 mg daily in divided doses every 8 – 12 hours; not to exceed 2500 mg/day.

For the extended-release tablets, the dose is 500 mg by mouth daily with dinner, not to exceed 2000 mg/day. 

Side Effects of Metformin HCl

The most common side effects of metformin are generally gastrointestinal-related such as diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea. It can also cause hypoglycemia and dizziness.
