Two sources familiar with the situation said Monday that Sanofi has offered to buy Translate Bio as the French drugmaker bets on next-generation mRNA technology following setbacks in the COVID-19 vaccine race, as reported in This is Money.

The rumours sent Translate Bio shares surging as much as 71% in after-hours trading.

Sanofi offers to buy U.S. mRNA partner Translate Bio

An offer for all Translate Bio shares had been made to the US group's shareholders, the sources said.

Translate Bio's board was expected to meet later on Monday to discuss the offer, one of the sources said, while the second source noted that Sanofi's directors had met on Sunday to discuss the potential transaction.
