Glycoproteins are proteins containing oligosaccharide chains linked by covalent bonds. The oligosaccharide chains are usually linked to proteins through co-translational modification or glycosylation during post-translational modification.

Glycoprotein polypeptide chains often carry many short heteroglycan chains. They usually include N-acetylhexylfurfuramide and hexoses (usually galactose or mannose, and to a lesser extent glucose). The chain end members are often sialic acid or L-fucose. This oligosaccharide chain is often branched, rarely containing more than 15 monomers, generally containing 2-10 monomers, and the molecular weight is equivalent to 540-3,200. The number of sugar chains also varies widely.
