What Is Levulinic Acid?

Levulinic Acid is a renewable bio-based acid that helps condition and soften the skin and acts as a preservative in the product itself.

It is a multifunctional compound containing carbonyl, α-hydrogen and carboxyl groups at the same time. It is the basic raw material for the synthesis of various light chemical products. It has a wide range of use values in organic synthesis, industry, agriculture and medicine.

Properties And Stability

1. Flammable. Soluble in water; Alcohol; Ether organic solvents, insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Atmospheric distillation hardly decomposes, but it loses water and generates unsaturated γ-lactone when heated for a long time. It is hygroscopic, and its aqueous solution is more acidic than acetic acid.
2. Chemical properties: It can react with ketones and acids. React with hydrazine to generate hydrazone; react with base to generate salt; react with alcohol to generate ester, etc. Oxidation, reduction, and halogenation reactions can also occur.

Application Direction

Levulinic acid conditions and softens the skin. It acts as a mild preservative with good antimicrobial properties and does not alter the structure and pH of other ingredients in the product.
